Meat From “Downed” Cattle Banned
(Sacramento) – A new law is being added to the California legal code that makes it a criminal act to sell meat made from “downed” animals – those who are too sick or injured to stand and walk. California State Assemblyman Paul Krekorian’s legislation, Assembly Bill 2098, creates an economic disincentive to such practices. Although meat from “downed” animals is known to expose consumers to a much higher risk of potentially life-threatening conditions such as bovine spongiform encephalitis (“mad cow disease”), the E. coli bacteria and salmonella, many slaughterhouses throughout the United States have forced these animals into the slaughter line, often by resorting to inhumane practices. Here’s more in this Assembly Web Report.
Californians Want Budget to Reflect Their Values
Californians Want Budget to Reflect Their Values from California Assembly Access on Vimeo.
(Sacramento)- Support for a state budget that reflects real California values is growing throughout the state. From Southern California, through the Central Valley and along the California Coast to the San Francisco Bay Area and the rest of Northern California people are calling on state lawmakers to approve a new state spending plan that funds education, health care, transportation and care for the elderly, blind and disabled. In this Assembly Access video real Californians, Assembly Speaker Karen Bass and other top Democratic Assemblymembers make it clear it's "our values and our future" that must be included in the state budget.
