Assembly Member Berg's response to our letter:
Thank you for your email in support of legislation legalizing ferrets. I appreciate hearing from you on this issue.
As you may know, from 1994 through 2006, a bill has been introduced each legislative session to legalize the ownership of domestic ferrets as pets in California. The first bill to pass through both houses of the Legislature was SB 89 by Senator Alpert in 2004. I supported SB 89, although the bill was ultimately vetoed by Governor Schwarzenegger who stated that in order to gain his support in the future, an environmental impact report determining whether ferrets are detrimental to the health and safety of California citizens and the environment would have to be completed.
In 2006, I supported AB 647 (Koretz), which aimed to allow pet ownership of spayed and neutered domestic ferrets for pets upon completion of the previously mentioned environmental impact report. Ultimately, this measure also failed to gain the necessary support. The Senate Appropriations Committee concluded that a study could not be funded given the budget deficit at the time.
